Organization: Adam Teva V'Din/Israel Union for Environmental Defense
Mission: Adam Teva V'Din/Israel Union for Environmental Defense is the leading
environmental and legal advocacy organization in Israel. Through expert use of a wide array of legal tools, scientific research and public partnerships, we successfully defend Israel's precious natural resources and open spaces. We develop environmental laws in court, both from the private and public sectors, we deter future harm to Israels' environment. Our efforts on behalf of Israel's underserved populations put into practice our firm belief that all Israeli citizens have the fundamental right to a clean livable environment. Organization Description: Adam Teva V'Din, the Israel Union for Environmental Defense was founded in 1990 as the country's first environmental watchdog. Today, Adam Teva V'Din is comprised of over 30 environmental attorneys and scientists specializing in air and water quality, solid waste management & recycling, land use & urban planning.
What distinguishes Adam Teva V'Din from other environmental organizations is its focus on the human, lived-in environment, and our strategic goal of providing Israel's citizens with the same level of environmental protection that is integral to modern life in the United States and other western democracies.
We work on three fronts:
Environmental litigation
Using our innovative, proactive approach and special standing under environmental laws, we have filed dozens of public interest lawsuits to bring about improvements in air quality, water protection and open space protection.
Environmental legislation and policy development
By introducing innovative, bold new bills to Israel's Knesset, Adam Teva V'Din has challenged lawmakers to legislate important environmental policy. All of Israel's major legislative milestones over the last decade emanated from this organization.
Environment and Community
As an organization, we are proudest of the pro bono (free) work we do in helping Israelis from all population sectors find solutions to environmental threats in their communities and neighborhoods. Our environmental justice team informs, educated and empowers all Israelis to have meaningful participation in decisions that affect their environment and compels local authorities to comply and enforce business permits and zoning laws. Over the last decade, we have processed nearly 10,000 appeals and helped many thousands of Israelis towards a cleaner, healthier environment and quality of life.
Fun Fact: As part of our focused policy on recycling, we promote the recognition of "waste as a resource" in order to encourage Israelis to reduce their waste, recycle and reuse.
Did you know that if each Israeli citizen used reusable bags instead of disposable plastic bags we could save:
2 bags daily
14 bags weekly
60 bags monthly
730 bags yearly
56,940 bags in the average lifetime of an Israeli man
59,860 bags in the average lifetime of an Israeli woman
If just a 10th of the entire population of Israel switched to using reusable shopping bags instead of disposable plastic bags during the average lifespan of 80 years, Israelis would prevent: 42,532,720,000 bags from being dumped in Israel's already clogged landfills.
