National Mitzvah Day FAQs 2012

Areyvut's "Make a Difference" Day 2012
March 16 - 18, 2012

The Goal of "Make a Difference" Day
We invite schools, synagogues, families and community organizations to dedicate their day to helping others.  Areyvut's "A Kindness a Day Calendar: 365 Ways to Make a Difference," which offers 365 suggestions of how to incorporate tikkun olam (social action) into everyday life, is already uniting Jewish communities across the country in an effort to inspire acts of kindness.  On "Make a Difference" Day, this effort will be strengthened; thousands of families will turn the calendar's suggestions into action with the help of educational resources that Areyvut will provide.

When is "Make a Difference" Day?
On March 16, 2012 the "A Kindness a Day" Calendar will encourage people to:
"Try to be totally unselfish today."

Building upon this suggestion, "Make a Difference" Day, a national Mitzvah Day has been scheduled to take place from Friday, March 16th through Sunday, March 18th.  To ensure that everyone can be included in this event, synagogues, schools and organizations are encouraged to remember that these dates are meant as a guideline, and activities undertaken preceding or following the weekend should still register.

Where does "Make a Difference" Day take place?

In YOUR local community!  "Make a Difference" Day is a national Mitzvah Day that takes place everywhere and anywhere around the globe.  To bring "Make a Difference" Day to your community, all you need to do is get involved in a community service project between March 16 - 18, 2012 or let us know of a project that will be taking place at a different time during the year.  It's that simple!

Participation
Schools, synagogues, organizations and individuals are all invited to participate in the program.  Each particular setting will determine the best structure or form with which to use the educational materials.  We encourage families, schools and synagogues, organizations and communities that participate to send pictures of their projects and volunteers during "Make a Difference" Day to serve as models for future participants.  Pictures can be sent via e-mail to info@areyvut.org or mailed to Areyvut at
147 S. Washington Avenue Bergenfield, NJ 07621.

Registration
We invite you to register a project no matter how big or small.  Though registration is not required to participate, we encourage you to register so that we may share your project with others and inspire even more people to get involved.  Registration is simple, just click here.

Themes
The theme for the 2012 National Mitzvah Day is "Olam Chesed Yibaneh - The World is Built on Kindness".  Educational materials are available on the Areyvut website to help you address this theme, create a project, and incorporate Jewish sources.  The materials include a project planning unit, example activities, Jewish texts related to service-learning, suggestions for follow-up and other educational resources.
