Make a Difference Day Educational Resources

In partnership with the Jewish National Fund (JNF) Areyvut hosted its annual Make a Difference Day on April 4-6, 2008 with the theme of "Going Green".  Over 6,000 people worldwide participated in Make a Difference Day 2008 by participating in programs and projects through their synagogues, schools, community organizations and families.

Here are some examples:

Under the guidance of their troop leader, a local Girl Scout troop beautified and rejuvenated a shelter for handicapped and disabled orphans in Seoul, South Korea.

The Costin family of White Plains, NY, invited guests to an organic lunch in their community.  Parents used this opportunity to explain the importance of preserving the environment to their children.

Under the guidance and leadership of Ms. Edith Horovitz, 2nd and 6th grade students took part in Project Clean Up in Jacksonville, FL.  The students created "no litter" signs, picked up trash and cleaned up the road in front of their school.  They hope their actions will inspire others to take steps towards improving the environment.

Benjamin Glatt and his family planted crops in their front and back yards in Thornhill, Ontario, and used their food waste as compost for next year's soil.

In Burlingame, CA, members of Peninsula Temple Sholom installed solar panels to decrease their consumption of electricity.

Members of the Hashinui group of Dallas, TX, had a bike-a-thon and marathon at a community park to focus on staying healthy and living green.  They also provided information on how to become "eco-Kosher".

We would like to express our gratitude toward all the organizations and individuals who were instrumental in ensuring that Make a Difference Day 2008 was a success.  We would also like to acknowledge all the schools, synagogues, agencies and individuals who participated in Make a Difference Day and we look forward to your involvement in Make a Difference Day 2009.
