| | DEFINITION OF CONCEPTS

Areyvut - Mutual responsibility, accountability; the notion that every Jew is responsible for another. It comes from the principle found in Talmud Shavuot 39a where it states, “kol yisrael areiveim zeh b’zeh” meaning that all Jews are responsible for one another.
Bein Adam Lachaveiro - Lit. Between man and his fellow man. Referring to Jewish laws regarding behavior of one person towards another. An example would be not gossiping. (This is in contrast to laws regarding one's behavior towards God - Bein Adam LaMakom.)
Bnai Mitzvah - Children who are of bar or bat mitzvah age-12 years old for a girl and 13 years old for a boy. These are the ages in which, according to Jewish law, one is considered an adult. It is customary to have a celebration commemorating this occasion.
Chesed - Kindness; Acts of kindness.
Gemilut Chasadim - Bestowing kindness.
Philanthropy - Helping humankind through significant charitable donations of time or money.
Service Learning - A form of experiential learning that combines service to the community with academic knowledge and critical thinking skills.
Social Action - Taking action to assist people in need.
Tikkun Olam - Acts of kindness to repair or perfect the world (lit. Repairing the world.)
Tzedakah - Charity; Charitable acts. (From the word tzedek, meaning righteousness or justice.)
Yom Iyun - A day of learning.
