| A Package from Home offers the opportunity for Bnai Mitzvah to perform a mitzvah by helping the soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). There are many ways to be involved in A Package from Home’s project. First, by adopting an army unit of Chayelim Bodedim (soldiers with no family in Israel), each Chayal Boded will receive a care package filled with such as items as a t-shirt, anti fungal socks, fleece jackets, long underwear, hat, gloves, assorted snacks, toiletries and a letter of appreciation written by adults and children from around the world. A Bnai Mitzvah may include a letter with their invitation telling their guests about their project and/or ask guests to donate directly to A Package from Home, or the Bnai Mitzvah can decide to personally adopt an army unit. In addition writing letters to be included in the packages, collecting supplies for the soldiers and other ideas can be part of their chesed project. |

| We promote English Literacy in Israel, primarily in the Jerusalem area. We have after school classes to teach, teacher training seminars to train teachers in our methodology, we sponsor a Read-a-thon, Writing Contest and build libraries. We also run Breaking Through, an individualized program that we bring to schools, to help dyslexic kids learn to read English. We provide scholarships for families of a low socioeconomic level.
We do all this because without a passing grade in the all important English Matriculation Exams set by the government children do not get their High School Diploma. Currently only about 45% of all Israeli students graduate High School. |
|

| Books can be collected for our libraries - the drawback is that they also must find a way to get them here. This is a good project if the family is coming to celebrate in Israel, and everyone can bring a bag of books.
School supplies can be collected for us.
Money can be raised to sponsor any of our projects. In each case, we can break down each project into parts that guests can buy in addition or in lieu of gifts for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah child. For example if we wanted to build a library we could list books, plastic to cover, shelving, etc.. as gift opportunities. Pictures can be sent to be used as centerpieces or party favors.
Recently a Bat Mitzvah girl just built us a beautiful garden for the grounds around us. Not only that, but enough was raised to also start an environmental program that the children will learn about - all in English! |

| Description of Organization: |
|
| Action for Post-Soviet Jewry assists Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union, mainly in eastern Ukraine, Belarus and Kishinev, Moldova. Its main project is called Adopt-a-Bubbe. We are helping over 1,500 pensioners with food, medicine, clothing, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and occasionally coal for the winter, refurbishing a burned-out apartment and more. Action for post soviet Jewry also provides aid for students at Jewish Day Schools and Jewish orphanages. Usually this is medicine, clothing and kosher vitamins. Action for Post-Soviet Jewry supports a free medical clinic in Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkov, Ukraine. |
|
| Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13: |
|
| Action for Post-Soviet Jewry has a Bar/Bat Mitzvah "twinning" program which links youngsters in America with their counterpart in Ukraine, usually a Jewish Day School student. The organization encourages the youngsters to write to one another and exchange pictures and items of interest about their families, schools and hobbies. This is an effort to link Jewish young people across the world, and to appreciate the many similarities and differences in the way each lives. In several communities, the children come from very poor families. Therefore, they are trying to collect children's clothing (especially warm jackets, hats and sweaters) and shoes. Several Jewish Day Schools have asked us to provide shoes, which are expensive and which often wear out and are outgrown by youngsters. If participants can get them to PSJ's office, they can send them in directly to the schools where they are most needed. Used clothing or shoes must be in very good condition. Youngsters who live near the APSJ office are welcome to volunteer to pack medicine and clothing for shipment. |

| Description of Organization: |
|
| The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) aims to create a safe and structured community for orphaned children in Rwanda. Nearly one million people were murdered in 100 days in 1994, leaving 1.2 million children orphaned today. ASYV will be a place where these traumatized youth can "dry their tears" (Agahozo) and "live in peace" (Shalom). Within this environment, the "rhythm of life" will be restored: a child rises from his/her bed in the morning, eats breakfast with siblings and "parents," walks to school and back home in the afternoon. The result is healthy adults who are not only able to care for themselves and their families, but who are committed to making their community and the world a better place. ASYV will be an opportunity for Americans, Israelis and Rwandans to work together to establish a tangible and long-term response to Rwanda’s critical orphan problem. A team of Ethiopian-Israelis are serving as mentors and role models for the staff and students. Many are graduates of Yemin Orde, a village founded in 1953 in Israel to care for orphans of the Holocaust. Construction has commenced at ASYV and the first group of students will begin their academic year in January of 2009. |

| Description of Organization: |
|
| Am Echad, a nonprofit, charitable 501(c)(3) organization, was established in the year 2000 to provide financial and moral support directly to destitute elderly and disabled Jews in the former Soviet Union. They help the most lonely, the most desperate, those with no relatives, and those who are not reached by the efforts of the mainstream Jewish organizations. Many of these Jews do not have any money for food and medicine, and do not have a family to support them. Am Echad provides help directly, in some cases literally, by saving them from starvation or imminent death due to catastrophic illnesses. Their health can be improved, and their physical suffering can be alleviated with medicine. Am Echad makes it possible.
A grass roots, all-volunteer organization, Am Echad has limited resources and relies solely on donations. The majority of its efforts go to finding the neediest individuals to whom they can provide direct assistance. Sadly, that number grows daily. Am Echad already knows many of them, but they cannot start helping these people until more funds become available.
All contributions received by Am Echad are used immediately to improve the lives of these all but forgotten people.
|
|
| Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13: |
|
| You can help these poor, elderly people in a number of ways:
- Organize a program at your synagogue or school to raise awareness of the critical situation of elderly Jews living in Russia.
- Start tzedakah drives in your neighborhood, school, or synagogue to collect money for Am Echad.
- Donate a certain percentage of the money that you receive on your birthday or Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
Many Jewish communities all over the U.S. would be glad to support Am Echad's work if they knew about it. Am Echad would gladly send them information if it had their names and addresses. They need volunteers to send them information such as a list of members at your local synagogue. CONFIDENTIALITY AND SECURITY GUARANTEED. AM ECHAD'S MAILING LIST IS NEVER SHARED WITH ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION.

| ALYN Hospital, located in Jerusalem, Israel, is one of the world's leading specialists in the active and intensive rehabilitation of children who have physical challenges and disabilities as a result of congenital muscular, neuromuscular and skeletal disorders, invasive cancer surgery, fires, accidents and terrorist attacks. American Friends of ALYN Hospital is the exclusive awareness raising and fundraising organization in the United States for ALYN Hospital.
ALYN treats children from birth to young adulthood, regardless of religion or ethnic origin and is the only facility of its kind in Israel. Absolutely everything needed to rehabilitate a child is under one roof at ALYN and a talented staff combines expertise with love and state-of-the-art technology to help each patient reach his or her highest possible level of mobility and independence.
The Rehabilitation Center is a nonprofit that receives no government funding and its extraordinary care is only partially reimbursed from health insurance. Donations are desperately needed to bridge the gap between insurance and the true cost of care as well as to fund research, replacement equipment and renovations.

| ALYN’s Mitzvah of Love Project is an easy, fun and customizable way for individuals and groups to raise much needed funds to support ALYN Hospital. You can join other children, schools and groups who have also chosen a variety of exciting ways to raise much needed funds to support ALYN Hospital. Projects have ranged from bake-a-thons to walk-a-thons to read-a-thons to dance-a-thons. Mitzvah of Love is the brainchild of Cathy Lanyard, Executive Director of American Friends of ALYN Hospital who wanted to find an inviting way to combine the elements of charity and tikkun olam in a physical based project that can involve an entire community. Based on the concept that if young people are taught in their formative years about the enormous satisfaction of “doing good” and “giving back” we are all helping to create the kind of world we all dream about. Cathy Lanyard believes one of the most important benefits is that Mitzvah of Love enables young people to do because they can for children who cannot.
ALYN provides you with all the materials you require and every participant receives a free I LOVE ALYN pedometer- which keeps tracks of steps and serves as a reminder of how easy it is to take a step when you are able bodied. What is just a step for you is a challenge for an ALYN child. We will also loan you our Mitzvah of Love Banner to be used on the day/s of the event. |

| Description of Organization: |
|
| Since 1979 when Orr Shalom opened Israel’s first therapeutic family group home, this premiere not-for-profit organization has been continually expanding its services to meet the multi-faceted needs of abused and neglected children throughout Israel. Today there are 330,000 at risk children in Israel; 10,000 have been removed from their homes; more than 1100 of these children are the beneficiaries of Orr Shalom’s services. The vast majority of our children are no longer able to live with their families because of the abuse and neglect they have suffered. They live in a variety of settings depending upon their individual levels of need. For those who are able to remain safe at home, Orr Shalom provides a range of supportive services to children at risk and their families. |
|
| Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13: |
|
| You can help Orr Shalom make their kids feel important by providing the day-to-day things that mean a lot. Your tzedakah, at any level, can improve kids' lives. Your help will provide: additional hours of therapy, new clothes, an allowance, fun extracurricular activites, or something special for their room.
Through your tzedakah, you can help give a special Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration to a deserving kid at Orr Shalom.
Like you, the teen you sponsor will enjoy: A special celebration in their honor and the pride of helping to plan their Bar or Bat Mitzvah; The fun of shopping for new clothes; The support of people that care about them.
Are you ready to change a life? |

| Yad Eliezer aims to combat poverty in Israel on the individual, communal, and national level by providing critical short-term relief while simultaneously confronting the underlying causes of indigence, forging broad-based solutions that empower long-term financial and emotional stability. |

|
| Yad Eliezer has two programs that are suitable for Bnai Mizvot. Since YE only operates in Israel this would not be a hands on project but would rather involve putting together enough money - through friends and projects (such as centerpieces or basketball tournaments). The first one is its Big Brother, Big Sister program, which YE can separately email more information to you. The second is its Tefillin program where a Bar/Bat Mitzvah "adopts" a contemporary in Israel from an indigent family and enables them to purchase a pair of Tefillin. |

AZM is the American affiliate of the World Zionist Organization, the Zionist Federation in the United States.
The mission of the American Zionist Movement is to strengthen the connection of American Jews with Israel; develop their appreciation of the centrality of Israel to Jewish life worldwide; deepen their understanding of Israeli society and the challenges it faces; encourage travel, long-term visits and Aliyah to Israel; and to facilitate dialogue, debate and collective action to further Zionism in the United States and abroad. |

| Bring Israel's Soldiers Home Now
Children can learn about the Jewish and moral issues associated with the abduction of Israeli soldiers, including pidyon shevuyim and tikkun olam. (www.azm.org/guide.shtml). The guide engages students in learning about current events and their social responsibility to better the world through background information, role-playing dialogues, and questions for discussion. After learning about the issues involved, students can take action through:
--AZM's postcard campaign (http://www.azm.org/postcards3.shtml), featuring pre-written, pre-addressed postcards demanding a sign of life of the soldiers
--AZM dogtags (http://www.azm.org/dogtag.shtml), which students can wear to raise awareness of the issue and sell as a fundraiser.
--Downloadable posters (http://www.azm.org/posters.shtml), which can be displayed around a school, synagogue or community center at a rally.
We also offer holiday-appropriate materials to be used on Passover and Chanukkah:
--"Four More Sons, Four More Questions": http://www.azm.org/seder.shtml
--"Light a Candle -- Wear a Dogtag -- Remember the Soldiers": http://www.azm.org/chanusoldiers.shtml
Plan a Bar or Bat Mitzvah using the theme of working to bring back Israel's abducted soldiers:
Your Bar or Bat Mitzvah marks your acceptance of responsibility as a Jewish adult. What better way to underscore the significance of this special day than by using it to advocate for the release of fellow Jews, captured by terrorists while fighting to keep Israel safe? Here are some party ideas.
* Use AZM Dog Tags as party favors.
* Hand out Postcards which your guests can fill out and send to UN, Red Cross and US Department of State officials, demanding that they take action.
* Print out and hang Posters that broadcast the message: Bring Israel's Soldiers Home Now! |

| Description of Organization: |
|
| AMIT enables Israel's youth to realize their potential and strengthens Israeli society by educating and nurturing children from diverse backgrounds within a framework of academic excellence, religious values and Zionist ideals.
AMIT educates and cares for Israel’s youth, including the most vulnerable children in Israel. Some 70 percent of AMIT students cope with educational, psychological, economic and/or social risk factors. AMIT approaches each child as an individual, maximizing his or her potential, and enabling our students to become vital, productive members of Israeli society. The AMIT schools promote religious tolerance, service to the state and the recognition that every child is blessed with unique talents and abilities. Founded in 1925, AMIT operates more than 70 schools, youth villages, surrogate family residences and other programs, constituting Israel's only government-recognized network of religious Jewish education incorporating academic and technological studies. |
|
| Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13: |
|
| AMIT cares for more than 20,000 children in Israel. Many do not have families with whom to celebrate, with whom to share life's experiences, with whom to plan the milestone of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Many have families living below the poverty line. Some are children of immigrants who are struggling to make their way in a new homeland.
AMIT's Bar and Bat Mitzvah Twinning Program offers the opportunity to have your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or friend's child approaching his or her Bar or Bat Mitzvah bond with an AMIT child in Israel, who is also preparing for this special day.
By "twinning" a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, you will add a dimension of Tzedakah to your child's celebration and provide an underprivileged child in Israel with the memories of a lifetime.

| ATZUM’s work is founded on the belief that Israel should serve as an example for the rest of the world in addressing social problems and crises. ATZUM encourages individuals to become social activists and be part of a process providing assistance and creating change. Through its network of volunteers and support from friends and contributors, ATZUM is able to make a crucial difference in the following areas:
1) Assistance to Survivors of Terror. Countless Israeli families have suffered significant trauma and serious economic difficulties following death or injury. ATZUM helps 350 families to regain stability, particularly those whose major wage earner has been incapacitated.
2) Support to Righteous Gentiles. Israel is a home to 44 surviving Hasiday Umot Olam, Righteous Gentiles, and their spouses who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. ATZUM works to meet the basic needs of this heroic, elderly population and protect and improve the quality of life in their last years. |
|
| Bnai Mitzvah Projects or Volunteer Opportunities offered by the organization for children ages 11 - 13: |
|
| ATZUM'S Bnai Mitzvah project connects bar/bat-mitzvah aged children and their families in North America to bar/bat mitzvah in Israel who were wounded in a terror attack, or whose family members were wounded or killed. In each case, the American family decides how to define its relationship with the Israeli child. These include corresponding by letter, phone, or e-mail; sending gifts, or organizing special mitzvah projects in their hometown. |

| Bet Hayeled was established over 10 years ago by members of Kibbutz Merav.
This group home serves orphaned children or children from abusive homes that have been referred by the State's social service network. The home specializes in children who can not be returned to their homes and need to rebuild their life in a warm nurturing community.
The Home itself accommodates children, ages kindergarten through 12th grade. While the government's oversight ends when the children graduate high school, Bet Hayaled's lifetime commitment to these young adults continues on. Bet Hayaled has pledged to be their "family" and see them through (both emotionally and financially) the next stages of life.
This may include such challenges as the army, yeshiva study, national service, and university education. In short, Bet Hayaled's mission is to extract these children from the cycle of distress, while creating a framework that allows them to integrate into and contribute to society. |

| Birthday Angels is dedicated to giving children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Israel a birthday party with their friends.
Birthday Angels produces beautiful Party Kits full of games, decorations, music and stickers which are used by volunteers from most of Israel's biggest mentoring and social welfare organizations to run a two hour, self-esteem building event with the children and their classmates. At the end of the party the child fills out a "Thank You Card" that is included in the kit which is sent to the Angel who has donated the party. As of today, Birthday Angels has provided parties for over 3000 Israeli children. It has won the Menachem and Aliza Begin Service to the Community award twice.

| Camp Kesem National recruits and guides college students nationwide through the process of creating summer camps for children who have a parent with cancer.
In struggling to deal with their parent's battle with cancer, many children lose the simple joys of childhood. It can be challenging for these children to find peers with whom they can relate. CKN camps give these children a magical week of non-stop fun with peers who understand what it's like to have a parent with cancer. Camps are one-week, residential summer experiences open to children ages 6-13. Due to the financial burden placed on families coping with cancer, CKN camps are free to all families. Each camp is entirely organized and staffed by volunteer college students. Counselors undergo extensive training prior to camp. |

| Carmei Ha’Ir stands out from other charities in its dedication to preserving the dignity of the client while providing basic needs. At Carmei Ha’Ir’s open restaurant there are no lines to wait on and no plastic utensils are given out. The sandwiches provided to hundreds of school children are slipped into their bags during recess so no one sees them receive the charity. In this way, our clients’ self esteem is preserved, giving them a greater chance at rehabilitation.
Our goal is to take the shame from receiving charity and prevent the client from losing their self esteem as they take what they need to get past this difficult time. Our success is evident in the change in demeanor, dress and attitude of our clients as well as those who return to volunteer at our restaurant once they no longer need us and have reestablished themselves.
Principals and social workers report on the improvement in the school performance and confidence of the children who receive our lunches.
Our clients pick out new clothing to their tastes and size as well as food items bought with a gift card given by Carmei. All these are steps towards our client's better future. |

| Evey 70 cents donated provides a schoolchild with lunch. A Bar/Bat Mitzvah can dedicate a sum towards this program.
In addition, Carmei often provides a celebration for those who cannot afford to make one. Sponsoring another child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a beautiful way to celebrate your own.
If you are in Israel, you can come and volunteer at the restaurant and be a part of this great mitzvah firsthand!

| Description of Organization: |
|
| City Green, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating the establishment of urban community gardens in northern New Jersey’s cities to enrich the lives of inner city residents, while cultivating education in public health, nutrition and the environment. They aim to create access to bountiful, fresh, organically grown produce; volunteer, work and leadership opportunities in the community; and welcoming, safe, natural respites that are a focal point for sociability, community involvement, cultural expression and individual empowerment.
Towards this mission, City Green currently offers two programs which were both started in Paterson, NJ. New Ground is City Green’s neighborhood community garden program designed to facilitate the creation of community gardens in urban neighborhoods on vacant lots and at other community establishments. City Sprouts is their youth gardening program, taking place at schools, after school facilities and summer camps. City Sprouts works to teach city children the importance and wonder of nature, how food grows, the joy of cultivating plants, lessons about preserving the natural environment.
Their programs address the lack of open space in the city, the lack of opportunities for community collaboration and the minimal access to fresh produce. |
