For many Bnai Mitzvah students and parents at Temple Beth Abraham in Tarrytown, NY, the notion of participating in a service project seemed like a fulfilling way to mark a student's entry into Jewish adulthood; the challenge they faced was identifying organizations with programs that speak to the unique interests and abilities of adolescents. On February 27th, Areyvut organized a Bnai Mitzvah fair to introduce the families of Temple Beth Abraham to some of the service opportunities that exist for young volunteers. At the fair, Areyvut enjoyed the opportunity to reach out to over forty synagogue families.
After a brief introduction to the notion of tzedakah and the synagogue's service requirements, participants were able to meet with representatives from various local agencies and browse literature from over twenty-five different organizations. Project ideas being promoted covered a broad range of interest and commitment level so that each student was able to find a project that meets his or her individual needs. Areyvut staff members were also on-hand to offer students and parents guidance on how to choose a service project, as well as additional project ideas and Bnai Mitzvah resources. Participants left the event with a number of new ideas to think about, and program representatives were excited about the prospect of working with such an enthusiastic group of students.
