On December 16th, SAR Academy in Riverdale, NY held a "Roots Fair" dedicated to exploring their Jewish roots. A centerpiece of the program was addressing chesed as this was central to the lives of our matriarchs and patriarchs. The program included studying texts about chesed and its importance, hearing guest speakers discuss their experiences volunteering for various communal agencies and performing acts of chesed. Rabbi Moshe Drelich, the Assistant Principal and coordinator of the program wanted the students to participate in hands on tangible acts of chesed. They decided to set up eight stations where students would have the opportunity to perform an immediate act of chesed. The 7th grade students were paired with 3rd graders and the 8th grade students with 4th graders. The stations included letter writing to Israeli soldiers to show support, the recitation of Tehillim (Psalms) for those in need of healing, writing birthday cards for senior citizens and making sandwiches to be distributed to the homeless. At every station the students were encouraged to think why each activity was indeed an act of chesed and to try to think of a Jewish source that supported their answer. Areyvut helped SAR develop the themes and hands on chesed ideas for the stations as well as facilitated partnerships with local communal agencies.
