In the fall of 2006, Areyvut in partnership with Shaaray Tefila and the Met Council on Jewish Poverty, inaugurated a program called Mitzvah Squared to donate Bar/Bat Mitzvah outfits to children in need. Areyvut collected suits, dresses, shirts, shoes and accessories that were distributed to Bobbie’s Places in Brooklyn, NY and the National Council of Jewish Women in Bergenfield, NJ. Many communities from the New York area participated in this clothing drive, including the Young Israel of Scarsdale, Temple Shaaray Tefila in Manhattan and Community Synagogue in Port Washington, NY. In addition, people from Elizabeth, NJ, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington D.C. recognized the importance of this program, and sent in clothing. Areyvut was able to provide over 100 suits, dresses and accessories for those in need. Mitzvah Squared was a resounding success and we are already working on another drive for the fall. Stay turned for more information!
Areyvut would like to thank Nancy Robbins who spearheaded this effort and Met Council who helped to store the clothes.
