Areyvut recently introduced its Bnai Mitzvah Resource Center, a new initiative to help Bar/Bat Mitzvah students enhance their celebrations by participating in social action projects. As part of this new initiative, Areyvut acted as a central component in three recent Bnai Mitzvah Fairs.
Areyvut took part in two Bnai Mitzvah Fairs to introduce day school students and parents to the importance of tikkun olam. Rabbi Shalom Jensen of North Shore Hebrew Academy (Great Neck, NY) organized a Bnai Mitzvah Fair for his students on March 24th, and parent Debby Spirgel arranged a similar fair at Har Torah (Queens, NY) on May 17th. Participants met with representatives from a variety of community service organizations that engage Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in social action projects and Areyvut offered advisory sessions to help students decide which projects were right for them.
On June 6th, Areyvut sponsored a community-wide Bnai Mitzvah Fair at AMF Chelsea Piers Lanes. Participants enjoyed bowling, refreshments, and a chance to explore a number of tikkun olam project ideas. Using their familiarity with a broad range of community service organizations and projects, Areyvut staff members worked one-on-one with students to think "out of the box" in search of exciting and unique projects that meet their individual interests.
Many students that Areyvut encountered were excited by the prospect of making a difference in their community. Areyvut looks forward to working with them to help them reach their goals.
