Balloons, invitations and music filled the Adolph Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland (ASHAR) auditorium in Monsey, New York on Sunday January 7th, 2007. Bnai Mitzvah students and their parents gathered together for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Showcase in Rockland County. They were looking for vendors as well as ways to enhance their celebration. One table that stood out from among the photographers, caterers, and DJ’s was Areyvut’s table. Areyvut’s Founder & Director, Daniel Rothner was there encouraging the students to not overlook the importance of enhancing a celebration (simchas) not only with more fun, yet with more meaning as well.
At the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Fair, Areyvut showcased ways in which Bnai Mitzvah can get involved in creating their own personalized projects that will help them connect their interests and hobbies to a chesed project that can help make the world a better place. Ultimately, the point of the “coming of age” celebration is about becoming an adult within the Jewish community. With that comes a responsibility that falls upon each child to begin to care about making a difference and helping change some problem in the world. Areyvut’s mission is to help each child choose a project that he/she can relate to and can be meaningful for them upon their entrance into the adult world.
