TEMPLE ANSHE SHOLOM - OLYMPIA FIELDS, IL

October 2003

Beginning Sunday October 26th, Temple Anshe Sholom in Olympia Fields, Illinois will be implementing a six-week program on Jewish Ethics of Speech in its sixth grade Hebrew School class. The curriculum, developed by Areyvut specifically for the school, challenges students to learn about Jewish values in engaging ways and integrate the ideas into their daily lives. Lesson topics include harmful speech, helpful speech, and using speech to reflect who we are. One of the class periods will also be spent putting principles into action with a trip to visit patients in a nursing home. Since speech is used constantly, learning about the Jewish ideas that regulate the use of speech is an important and effective way to teach students that Jewish values encompass every aspect of life.

September 2004

In the fall of 2003, Areyvut created a tailor-made curriculum for Temple Anshe Sholom, a Reform synagogue in Olympia Fields, Illinois, to implement in its sixth grade Hebrew School class. The six week program on Jewish Ethics of Speech enabled students to learn about Jewish values in engaging ways and challenged them to integrate the ideas into their daily lives. Areyvut staff took part in the initial and final lessons and supervised the remaining programs from afar. Lesson topics included harmful speech, helpful speech and using speech to reflect who we are. During one session, students put principles into action with a trip to visit residents in a nursing home. Since speech is used constantly, learning about the Jewish ideas that regulate the use of speech proved to be an important and effective way to teach students that Jewish values encompass every aspect of life.

Reactions to this program from Temple Anshe Sholom administrators, teachers and students were highly positive across the board. Students found the program to be engaging, relevant and applicable to their lives, and administrators and teachers reported that students did not act out during the course of the program. Students enjoyed the opportunity to visit a nursing home and planned to do a similar follow-up program for their parents and younger siblings. This program also succeeded in creating a connection between the Hebrew School and a community organization that can be developed further in future programs.
