ANNUAL LECTURE 2003/5763

On Tuesday evening, May 13th Areyvut held its first Annual Inaugural Lecture. Richard Joel, President Elect of Yeshiva University, addressed a crowd of over 150 people, at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, in New York.

Rabbi Avi Weiss, Rabbi Hebrew Institute of Riverdale & Mr. Richard Joel
"These dark times are an unbelievably opportune time for the rebuilding of the Jewish people," said Joel. As President and International Director of Hillel, Joel said that young Jews feel powerless and empty. "They want to cast a shadow, but they don't see a place for it." The Jewish community needs to enlighten this generation of Jews.

Mr. Richard Joel addresses 150 people on "Building a Jewish Tomorrow" at the first annual Areyvut Inaugural Lecture
Joel lauded Areyvut for its work toward this goal. "Areyvut is going into the day schools-any day school," showing students of all denominations how they can partner with God to perfect creation. Such work gives students the sense of nobility they desire and deserve. It empowers them to help make the world a better place. "What Areyvut is doing is so valuable," said Joel, because it shows Jews, through mitzvot, "how to enlighten the world and cling to their Yiddishkeit."

Daniel Rothner, Areyvut Founder & Director, Mr. Richard Joel & Ezra Tuchman Areyvut Board Member
He quoted the saying, "Am ehad b'lev ehad," (One nation, with one heart), stressing the need for all Jews to work together to build a strong Jewish community, and to focus on common goals, rather than differences. "We have forgotten 'Kol Yisrael Areyvim zeh bazeh.'" He said. "We must learn again to disagree lovingly."

Joel concluded by saying that the Jewish community must regain the courage to speak about values, and that "lishmor vela'asot," referring to mitzvot-based actions, is central to moving forward as a community and as a people.

Audio tapes of the presentation are available for $7 and video tapes are available for $15.
